On numerous trips Michél traveled extensively to Southeast Asia and Oceania. As a result, Polynesia quickly became one of his favorite regions and he created a deep bond with the countries and cultures of the Pacific region. As head of the Asia-Oceania department at DIAMIR Erlebnisreisen this passion now spurs him on in all areas of his tourism activities. Michél's Top Tips & Highlights The Māori culture, with all their amazing stories, really inspired me. If you are exploring the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand on a self-drive tour by motorhome or rental car, make sure you don't forget that the country has a lot to offer culturally. I highly recommend that anyone travelling New Zealand should book guided tours and activities. The Kiwi guides bring the country to life with the traditional Māori stories, information about current affairs in the country as well as a good dose of enthusiasm and cheeky jokes on every trip. In New Zealand, you can experience a variety of landscapes within a short time. New Zealand offers a diversity that you would perhaps only expect to get from a round-the-world trip. For example, between the romantic-dreamlike beaches of the Abel Tasman National Park and the rugged east coast of Kaikoura, there are only four driving hours - along vineyards, partly snow-capped mountains and rugged coastlines. Manaakitanga - the New Zealand hospitality - is indeed an attitude to life for the kiwis. You feel welcome, well received, and like part of the family. Michél's Top 10 Experiences 1/10 Te Puia Don’t be content watching the geyser from afar - This famous geothermal area in the heart of Rotorua is a must-do half day stop. Catch a glimpse of Kiwi birds, enjoy a steam cooked meal or learn about Maori life and craftsmanship in the cultural centre. Kayaking in Abel Tasman The park is a natural paradise, with beautiful landscapes, green fern forests, stunning beaches, blue water and diverse wildlife. It’s best explored on a multi-day hike, kayak or combo tour, staying overnight in one of the beautiful lodges. Waka Abel Tasman Follow in the footsteps of the early Polynesians, and enjoy a traditional Waka experience. Grab a paddle, take your position, follow the commands and explore the cool Tasman Sea, the traditional way. A really great experience, especially for families! White Island Since first standing on a volcano, I’ve been fascinated by the forces of nature. The active marine volcano, White Island, was a real highlight for me, with its lunar landscape of sulfur fumaroles, incredible colors & Hollywood-esque ruins of a sulfur mine. Scenic Flights Helicopters and small planes have never factored into my holiday activities but this will change now. The perspective you get from above is simply unbeatable. Sightseeing flights offer the opportunity to discover and experience something new. Dolphin Encounter in Kaikoura Kaikoura is synonymous with natural beauty and marine life. I didn’t swim but I had a great view of the Dolphins’ acrobatics from the boat. I admire how respectful of the wildlife the crew were, ensuring we interacted with the dolphins “on their terms”. Tamaki Maori Village, Rotorua The cultural shows in Rotorua can be recommended in good conscience. Maori no longer live in thatched huts but these cultural evening activities allow you to experience traditional food, songs and dances and learn interesting facts about their history. Domestic Flights A flight saves time but also offers new perspectives. Flying from Rotorua to Wellington we saw the snow-covered volcanoes of Tongariro National Park and Taranaki! And it’s so easy – no lengthy security checks or crowds. Food For me, eating local food is part of experiencing a country. With its clean air, clear streams and wide pastures, New Zealand has a lot to offer for foodies, whether it’s street stand, café or fine dining restaurant. Hobbiton Even 17 years after the first movie, Hobbiton is still a masterpiece. I'm more of a nature type and often pass up such attractions, but even I enjoyed it. There’s something new to discover in every corner. A nice day trip - not only for movie fans.
