In the very heart of Te Ika-a-Māui (the North Island), Ruapehu is a destination that delivers activities, adventure and amazing landscapes year-round. At the region’s centre is Mt Ruapehu itself, in winter a snow-capped maunga (mountain) rising between the neighbouring peaks of Mt Ngāuruhoe and Mt Tongariro, and home to two separate ski fields: Tūroa and Whakapapa.
But Ruapehu’s winter experiences extend far beyond the slopes. Don thermals and a puffer jacket and get exploring, whether in search of waterfalls – the popular Tawhai Falls was used as a filming location in the Lord of the Rings – or soaking up the atmosphere of the alpine villages such as Ohakune and Whakapapa. On those wet weather days, indoor activities include rock climbing and local museums.
