What is your favourite ‘undiscovered location’ in New Zealand?

Leigh, Auckland region

Why is it special to you?

We decided to start having Christmas in Leigh when we noticed that my Mum would have to spend the whole Christmas in the kitchen while hosting my very large family. We wanted everyone to relax and enjoy the break so for a few years we rented a beach house in Leigh and had a Christmas BBQ rather than a 5 course banquet! Very Kiwi!  A Christmas sea swim is also essential and you have a handful of some of the most beautiful beaches in New Zealand – including Pakiri beach, Mathesons Bay and Goat Island marine reserve really close by. Snorkelling around Goat Island is very fun! And you can also hire paddle boards.

Who did you travel with?

My whole extended whanau (family).

What is your best piece of advice for people visiting Leigh?

My favourite place is the Leigh Sawmill. It is a very cool gig venue and most of the big kiwi acts stop there on their summer circuit. They also serve delicious pizza.

How do you get there?

Fly into Auckland International Airport and drive north for approximately one hour.

The pretty coastal community of Leigh is a haven for water lovers. Marine activities such as swimming, fishing, kayaking and snorkelling are all on offer. For those who prefer to keep their feet on dry land activities such as horse riding and coastal walks are not to be missed.
