In 1998, Sir Peter Jackson’s team of location scouts were searching for the iconic rolling hills and lush green pastures of Hobbiton™. An aerial search led them to the Alexander farm, a stunning 1250 acre sheep farm in the heart of the Waikato. A short while after, once negotiations were complete, the crew began the nine month quest to bring Hobbiton to life, ready for the filming of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and later The Hobbit Trilogy.

Today at Hobbiton Movie Set , we welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors from all across the globe, having established ourselves as a ‘must see’ activity for travellers to New Zealand. Our experience offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to step into an iconic movie set in its full glory. From wandering the rambling paths as seen on the silver screen, to seeing the submerged Hobbit Holes that litter the rolling hillsides of the 12 acre set, your tour guide escorts you around the movie set, pointing out the intricate detailing and unique props, reminiscing iconic scenes from the films and explaining how the movie magic was made.

Our guides blend together a mix of storytelling, personality and kiwi hospitality into each tour and love being part of a truly unique NZ experience. For us, the real magic is sharing stories of how our piece of rural New Zealand was transformed into a film set for one of the most iconic film franchises of all time, and seeing visitors faces light up as they are transported into a fictional world.
