Stargrazing is our word for the captivating combination of Aotearoa New Zealand’s star-studded dark skies and rich culinary culture.
Across the motu (country) there are seven Dark Sky Places which provide manuhiri (visitors) with the opportunity for exceptional stargazing experiences all year-round. While the dramatic diversity of our landscapes creates incredible produce that makes its way onto the menus of New Zealand’s restaurants.
Showcasing the stellar pairing of starry skies and delicious cuisine, Tourism New Zealand invited international tastemakers to enjoy a six-course degustation menu meticulously created by celebrated New Zealand chef Ben Bayly. The restaurant’s name, Pou-o-Kai, for this one-off experience was gifted by local iwi (Māori tribe) and loosely translates to a place of kai (food) as well as being an ode to the eagle that used to soar the skies of Kura Tawhiti Castle Hill, where the evening’s event was held.
