Traditional weaving, Kohutapu Lodge
A community-focused, Māori owned business, Kohutapu Lodge, has taken out the top spot at the 2022 New Zealand Tourism Awards.
The prestigious awards show(opens in new window) celebrates individual and business successes across the tourism sector. 12 awards are given out on the night, highlighting industry excellence in Aotearoa New Zealand and providing a benchmark for operators.
As tourism’s most revered award, the Regenerative Tourism Award recognises a local business which is representative of New Zealand’s culture and values, has a strong focus on the wellbeing of communities and of course, is known for their excellent visitor experience.
Kohutapu Lodge(opens in new window), recipient of this award and the Community Engagement award, is a family owned and operated ‘home away from home’ accommodation, food and tour operator. The Bay of Plenty based business offers world-class food and beverage as well as a myriad of activities such as heli-hunting, mountain biking, freshwater fishing, guided hikes and more.
The business used Covid restrictions as a chance to educate and support the local rangatahi (youth) and have delivered 30,000 meals and counting to those in need in their community.
Overlooking Lake Aniwhenua, Kohutapu Lodge is a relaxing holiday spot in a near untouched location. If you seek a deeper connection with the area, you are invited to share in the stories, culture, kai (food) and the genuine manaakitanga (hospitality) offered by the hosts.
