Road access to Kaikoura:
SH1 south from Kaikoura to Christchurch: OPEN Fridays - Mondays, CLOSED Tuesdays - Thursdays (until 30 September 2017)
SH1 north from Kaikoura to Clarence/Picton: CLOSED (due to reopen December 2017)
Inland Route SH70 between Hanmer Springs and Kaikoura: OPEN
Travel between Christchurch and Picton via sH70 takes approximately 7.5 hours. This route is very scenic and there are great places to stop along the way. Click here to download a map and refer to the links below for information from various sources about what to see and do en route.

**Please take extra care driving the alternate route from Picton to Christchurch during the winter months (June to August). Plan for your trip by visiting www.nzta.govt.nz/winterjourneys
Tourism operations:
Number of accommodation providers open: 67 (80%)
Number of activity providers open: 40 (91%)
Number of retail, cafe and general services open: 91 (88%)
Whale Watch: operating daily (2-3 times around tides - see below for timetable links)
Dolphin Encounter and Albatross Encounter: operating daily (around tides)

Kaikoura Marina will be fully operational in October 2017. Whale Watch Kaikoura, Dolphin Encounter and Albatross Encounter will be operating at full capacity and Dolphin Encounter will have a new vessel.
