Harriet.jpgWhat is your name and where do you work?

Harriet Grubb, and I work at New Zealand in Depth.

What is your favourite place in New Zealand?

Just the one?  Hmmm, the west coast of South Island is spectacular and Doubtful Sound a truly stunning wilderness…but for me Waiheke Island just inches ahead as my favourite.

Why is it special to you?

Even the thought of it puts a smile on my face.  A good friend lives on the Island and the first time I visited was for another friend’s wedding, so I have happy memories there.  I remember swimming in the sea whilst watching dolphins leap out of the water a few metres away, drinking amazing wine at Mudbrick Vineyard and catching the ferry home wishing I could stay for longer!  It’s an incredible place to start or finish a holiday being just 35 minutes from mainland Auckland by ferry.

Do you have a favourite time of year to visit?

Autumn. The weather in March and April is usually still very good but it’s out of peak season so is a little quieter.

What do you see as New Zealand’s unique selling points – the “must-dos” when creating itineraries for your clients?

Must-dos are so subjective, and I try really hard not to let my personal preferences interfere when listening to a client’s interests…but who wouldn’t want to go penguin spotting?  For a similarly minded and vaguely active person I’d say the Tongariro Crossing is a must.  Whale watching in Kaikoura is great too, as you often get to see so much marine wildlife on the one cruise.  With all that in mind though most people have one objective when visiting New Zealand and that’s to see the awesome scenery.  Milford Sound and Fiordland are places that I genuinely think are good for the soul.  The friendliness and the humour of Kiwi folk are an added bonus.

Which aspect of the 100% Pure New Zealand Specialist Programme do you find most useful?

I have to say I enjoyed the online modules.  They allow your imagination to transport you to every corner of New Zealand, which is a real pleasure when you’re at your desk on a dull and rainy day in Buxton.
