This exciting five day itinerary will have your clients enjoying stunning scenery and attractions in New Zealand's lower South Island. 

The Waitaki region is a place of scenic contrast and haunting natural beauty. Regional highlights include visiting Clay Cliffs, Moeraki boulders, and viewing Little Blue Penguins.

Dunedin is a region of unique landscapes and fascinating cultural history. Many spectacular attractions and activities are on offer, with highlights including viewing wildlife on the Otago Peninsula and discovering the city’s history and heritage.

To ensure your clients are well rested after their flight, we recommend they stay a night or two in their arrival city before collecting a rental vehicle. Driving in a new country can be challenging and will be even worse if the driver is tired. The driver should always be well rested, take regular breaks during the journey and plan to drive for only 1-2 hours at a time.

New Zealand has unique road rules and driving conditions that your clients may not be used to. For a safe and enjoyable journey make sure your clients know where to find information on New Zealand’s road rules before they depart for their holiday.

  • Day 1: Christchurch

    Arrive into Christchurch, the gateway to the South Island. Spend the day exploring the central city.
     
    Christchurch is one of the world’s most unique destinations – see urban regeneration, creativity and innovation, in this ever-evolving city following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.  Discover vibrant new retail areas, restaurants and street art, sitting alongside exceptional projects like the Transitional “cardboard” Cathedral, Gap Fillers and other ideas which are breathing new life back into the city.

    • Experience a Māori cultural performance and Hāngi at Ko Tane
    • Play a round of golf at Clearwater Golf Club premier championship golf course
    • Enjoy a city sight-seeing tour on a Double Decker bus visiting places of interest in greater Christchurch
    • Learn about life in Antarctica at the International Antarctic Centre, features include The Antarctic Gallery, ‘Antarctica’ Snow and Ice experience, Antarctic Storm, Hagglund Ride, 4D Theatre, Historic Hut exhibit and Little Blue Penguins
  • Day 2: Christchurch - Omarama

    Drive Fly 3 hours 41 minutes 314 KMS 195 MI
    In the morning collect a rental vehicle from central Christchurch and self-drive from Christchurch to Omarama, approximately 3 hours 41 minutes. Lake Tekapo is a good place to break for lunch, and a photo stop at stunning Lake Pukaki is a must.

  • Day 3: Omarama - Oamaru

    Drive Fly 1 hour 23 minutes 118 KMS 73 MI
    Spend a relaxing morning in Omarama. In the afternoon self-drive from Omarama to Oamaru, approximately 1 hour 23 minutes. On the way your clients may like to stop at Duntroon to see incredible limestone formations called The Elephant Rocks.

  • Day 4: Oamaru - Dunedin

    Drive Fly 1 hour 23 minutes 112 KMS 69 MI
    In the morning self-drive from Oamaru to Moeraki, approximately 30 minutes, and marvel at the huge, spherical Moeraki Boulders. Your clients may also wish to stop for morning tea or lunch at Fleur’s Place. The drive from Moeraki to Dunedin will take approximately 1 hour.
     
    Historic Dunedin is renowned for its Victorian and Edwardian architecture, as well as its proximity to rare wildlife. The city is magnificently situated along Otago Harbour, sheltered by the Otago Peninsula; its rugged coastline is home to unique wildlife including the rare Yellow Eyed Penguin and the Royal Albatross. Dunedin is rich with preserved heritage; the Railway Station, Otago University and First Church are amongst the most iconic buildings. There are plenty of visitor activities available that showcase this city of rare and unique charm.

  • Day 5: Dunedin

    Drive Fly 0
    Spend a half day or full day spotting wildlife on the Otago Peninsula.
     
    Your clients may like to spend another day in Dunedin, continue their self-drive holiday to The Catlins and Southland, or fly home.
