Ultra-luxe private villas bolster New Zealand luxury offering
New Zealand’s luxury sector continues to develop with a series of exciting new ultra-luxe private villas just opened or nearing completion.
Leading New Zealand luxury lodges – The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs, The Landing in the Bay of Islands, and Stonefly Lodge in the South Island – are each adding to their accommodation offerings with new private villas and ultra-luxe city suites. Meanwhile, private villa specialist Touch of Spice has just added two luxury ‘mega villas’ to a growing inventory of glamorous and discreet destinations.
The Residences at Kauri Cliffs, Matauri Bay
Kauri Cliffs – one of three New Zealand luxury lodges owned and operated by the Robertson family – opened three impressive owner’s cottages in December 2019.
The four-bedroom family villas sit in private grounds adjacent but removed from the main lodge. Each villa has a private spa and 25-foot salt-water pool with sea views, easy access to the golf course, and many walking trails to three private beaches and across the vast coastal farm property.
With accommodation for up to eight guests, the villas have been designed for multi-generational family travel boasting spacious lounge and living areas, expansive verandahs and family kitchens with exclusive chef service. Individual decors are by celebrated New Zealand interior designer Virginia Fisher.
Rates at The Residences at Kauri Cliffs start from $16,900 NZD (approximately $11,000 USD) per night.

Stonefly Lodge’s spectacular new Falcon Brae villa – a 640 sqm architectural masterpiece on a hilltop in a private wilderness estate – opened in late 2019. Set in the beautiful hinterlands of the northern South Island Nelson region, it is close to three national parks and renowned for some of New Zealand’s best fly-fishing.
Falcon Brae’s location offers absolute privacy, along with panoramic views of the property which is surrounded on two sides by rivers and a private forest with beautiful native bush walks. The villa is built of local stone and timber and operates completely off-grid.
The exclusive-use four-bedroom villa, which accommodates 6 adults and 4 children, comprises three huge master suites with private decks, spectacular fireplaces, private chef and household staff.

The Landing Suites at Hotel Britomart, Auckland
When Hotel Britomart opens in Auckland in mid-2020, it will become New Zealand's first 5* Green Star Hotel, and a cornerstone development in the Britomart precinct – a vibrant central Auckland hub of hospitality, high-end boutiques, transport and tourism attractions.
Atop the 99-room hotel but apart from the hotel accommodation, the development includes five exclusive luxury lodge style penthouses. The Landing Suites will provide a chic urban hideaway for guests coming and going from The Landing, an exclusive luxury lodge and vineyard establishment just north of Auckland in the Bay of Islands.
Hotel Britomart and The Landing Suites have been developed by the Cooper family, owners of The Landing. Their rigorous commitment to sustainability extends to the fit out and operations of the hotel that occupies a heritage site and is constructed in handmade bricks.
