Spring has arrived in New Zealand and the kiwi chicks are hatching!
Read on for the latest on Jetstar’s recently announced domestic routes, a new luxury Fiordland cruise and the opening of a former office block-turned hotel in Christchurch.
Jetstar – new domestic routes
Jetstar will be launching low fares on five routes between Nelson, Napier, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Auckland and Wellington – with services scheduled to begin from December 2015.
China Southern Airlines – increased services to South Island
China Southern Airlines will fly three services a week between the South Island and China from December 2015. The year round service will add 70,000 seats into the South Island.
Johnston’s Coachlines – update
Johnston’s has commenced its fleet upgrade programme and has committed to the new MAN 35 seater vehicles.
Auckland Seaplanes – addition to fleet
Auckland Seaplanes has acquired a new amphibious De Havilland Beaver. The aircraft is capable of flying from any land-based airport to any water location and vice versa and is able to accommodate groups of 10-12 passengers.
SKYCITY Auckland – atrium upgrade
SKYCITY plans to spend NZ$24 million on upgrading the main atrium at its Auckland property. Improvements include new wall claddings, chandeliers and light features, new entrance doors and flooring and a new bathroom on the ground floor of the main site. Work is scheduled to be completed in September 2016.
TIME Unlimited Tours – finalist in the Luxperience Awards 2015
TIME Unlimited Tours has been chosen as a finalist in the Luxperience Awards category ‘Meaningful’, which pays tribute to attendees who achieve greater understanding of history, heritage and culture. The winner will be announced on 8 September.
Auckland War Memorial Museum – continuing maintenance and restoration
Starting in September, new work will focus on the restoration and preservation of heritage elements at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Once the space is ready the museum will install a commemoration centre in which people will be able to learn about New Zealand’s war history.

Mataatua – new product ‘Footsteps of Our Ancestors’
Take a 1.5-hour guided walking journey in Whakatane to explore significant sites of the Ngati Awa tribe. Learn of descendants who used the constellations as a ‘star gate’ to navigate across the Pacific Ocean, travelling from island to island to reconnect back to their forefathers.
Rainbow Springs – new kiwi chicks
Rainbow Springs have their first four wild kiwi eggs of the new season in incubation and one of their breeding pairs have a brand new egg as well. The Behind the Scenes tour of Kiwi Encounter is available as a stand-alone product.
The Manse – awarded New Zealand Luxury Lodge status by Qualmark
This intimate country retreat, located near the world-renowned Gimblett Gravels wine region, has received Qualmark’s Luxury Lodge status. The lodge’s two suites can accommodate up to four guests. It features a heated salt-water pool wrapped by large decks and entertainment areas, and shaded decks which allow your clients enjoy al-fresco dining. Hosts and owners Dietske and Gary speak English, Dutch, French and German.
Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa – update
Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa has announced plans to create what is described as New Zealand’s first true European-style luxury day spa in Hanmer Springs village. It will feature indoor and outdoor pools, a steam room and an ice cave. There will also be a treatment room, an eatery and a retail boutique.
Breakfree on Cashel – now open
The remodelling of Christchurch’s newest and largest hotel has been completed and is now welcoming guests. The 264-room Breakfree on Cashel Christchurch is a former office block and has been transformed into an affordable place to stay.
Fiordland Discovery – new Preservation Inlet seven-day cruise product
Experience an unforgettable seven-day cruise on Doubtful, Breaksea and Dusky Sounds, and Preservation and Chalky Inlets. The luxurious Fiordland Jewel has nine luxury cabins complete with ensuite and is capable to carrying up to 20 passengers. Highlights include viewing rare wildlife, exploring under the water via a HD remote control vehicle and a range of water activities. The cruise departure date is 8 June 2016.
Real Journeys – cruise timetable changes
Real Journeys Overnight cruises in Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound recommence this month. Your guests can relax and overnight in a UNESCO World Heritage area and explore the shoreline by kayak or small boat.
