Zealandia adds Qualmark Gold to its accolades

Zealandia is celebrating a great start to the year. Visitor numbers are up and the sanctuary has picked up accolades and awards, boosting its reputation in eco-tourism.

Home to some of New Zealand’s rarest and most extraordinary wildlife, thriving in the world’s first fully fenced urban eco sanctuary, Zealandia recently achieved a Qualmark Gold Sustainable Tourism Business Award. The award recognises the best sustainable tourism businesses in New Zealand. For the third year running, Zealandia in central Wellington has been officially rated CarbonNZero. It also recently won the New Zealand Sustainable Business Award for Restoring Nature.

Zealandia has been praised for restoration of its 225 hectares of ecosystem including threatened species, largely as a result of thousands of hours of volunteer effort.  As part of the groundbreaking conservation project, native species have dramatically increased, several species that had been wiped out from the area have been returned and 18 species of native wildlife have been reintroduced, six of which had been absent from mainland New Zealand for more than 100 years.

The long-term goal for Zealandia is to restore a corner of mainland New Zealand as closely as possible to the way it was before humans arrived.

Visitor numbers are up by 15-20 per cent, with a 50:50 split between domestic and international visitors. The Zealandia by Night tour remains a favourite with visitors and the Day and Twilight tours are growing in popularity.
