West Coast of New Zealand ranked in Top Ten

Lonely Planet has chosen the West Coast as one of the world’s Top 10 Regions for next year in its Best In Travel 2014, the ninth annual collection of the best trends, destinations, journeys and experiences for the upcoming year. Independently voted by over 500 Lonely Planet authors and staff this is a fantastic coup for the West Coast.

Lake Matheson, Rob Suisted
West Coast, New Zealand is ranked eighth on the book’s list of Top 10 Regions 2014. "Those who think they’ve seen it all should prepare for some enlivening surprises," Lonely Planet says. "Here’s your chance to venture into untamed territory normally well beyond your limits, such as the icy faces of Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, or beyond them into the midst of the Southern Alps on a scenic flight," the book says. "Raft down the wild white waters of the Buller River, or kayak across New Zealand’s largest natural lagoon and up into narrow channels overhung with strange plants and enriched with birdlife."

This is a huge marketing opportunity for the Coast and will give our operators a great boost for the busy season, says Jim Little from Tourism West Coast.

Lonely Planet has previously ranked the Great Coast Road to Westport one of the top 10 coastal drives in the world so this is fabulous news to top that off. The 4 page editorial shows 2 main images of Franz Josef Glacier and jet boating along with comments on the cycle trails, the Heaphy track, kiwi breeding programme, Lake matheson, Fox & Franz Josef Glaciers, kayaking wetlands, Hokitika Wild Foods Festival, Coast to Coast race and an amusing anecdote about Moa tracks.
